I bought this book as a supplement for my student doing an extended project on the history of Japan. I intentionally chose it because the reviews said it was less dry and likely more approachable for a high-schooler. Maybe they read a different book?As an adult who likes reading history, I found this book boring. It's almost like a stream-of-consciousness lecture from an expert. All of the images --which are sparse-- were sourced from Wikimedia Commons and the overt Word/Times New Roman formatting in the book makes the whole thing seem like something an old history professor typed up in a couple of weekends as a vanity project.Most importantly... there is absolutely nothing "Captivating" about this book. It's the most surface-level, fire-hose overview of Japanese history. There's none of the "story" that draws a reader to history by immersing the reader in the greatest event or greatest figures.All in all-- Look elsewhere (unless you just want a quick overview so that you can tell your friends you've studied Japanese history when you haven't.) I came to this book with absolutely zero knowledge of Japan, so all the contents are fascinating to me insomuch as it feels like exploring the history of a near alien civilization from my perspective. The book is well written and concise, yet informative, and covers a broad range of topics to give a general overview without getting too bogged down in the minutiae.
